- Lime Kiln Updates
Lime Kiln post Fire:
The re-instatement of the swimming pool and the associated facilities is to be linked to the wider discussions which will assess opportunities to create a campus in the Wootton Bassett community area, as the present situation allows scope to link any remedial works to a long term vision for the town.
The Wootton Bassett and Cricklade Area Board has formed a Shadow Community Operations Board in relation to the campus proposal for Wootton Bassett. The Shadow Community Operations Board consists of area board and town/parish council representatives and members of the public to ensure it can act on behalf of and to represent the local community, and has a key role in leading the consultation on the campus proposal for Wootton Bassett and its surrounding area.
The Shadow Community Operations Board have highlighted that the users of the pool, as well as the school are essential stakeholders in the Wootton Bassett campus proposal, and it is vital that the interests of these groups are key to any campus proposal. The Shadow Community Operations Board therefore has indicated that developing a proposal that incorporates the facilities at Lime Kiln Leisure Centre was an option that should be progressed, whilst considering other options.
Creating a campus offers a real opportunity for communities to directly influence the services in their community area, and to plan for the future. In the interim, as a minimum, weather protection has been installed to protect the building from further damage, until the outcome of the community campus consultation is known, and a long term vision for facilities in the town is clearer.
Given that the campus proposal could potentially involve reconfiguration of the building the Wootton Bassett and Cricklade Area Board agreed at its meeting on 6 July that it would not be a prudent use of public funds to affect a temporary repair when partial or complete demolition might subsequently be required shortly thereafter. As such no further re-instatement work will be undertaken to the swimming pool until decisions have been made regarding the development of the campus. It is anticipated that decisions regarding the campus development and the associated timelines will be made by December 2011.
Many of the questions asked about the temporary closure of the Lime Kiln pool following the fire incident and about the campus programme have been previously answered in full in a variety of documents which can be found on the Area Board website at :

Update as of Friday 25 February 2011
LIME KILN LEISURE CENTRE TO BE PARTIALLY RE-OPENED ON 28 MARCH 2011
Wiltshire Council and DC Leisure are pleased to announce that following the fire on December 18, remedial works are on target to enable those parts of the building not directly damaged by the fire to be re-opened on 28 March.
On 18 December, 11 Fire appliances and 50 firemen attended a fire at Lime Kiln Leisure Centre. The fire damage centred on the health suite, male and female swimming changing rooms, and the main corridor causing significant structural and roof damage in these areas, as well as the swimming pool plant room with further heavy smoke pollution in the swimming pool hall itself.
Both Wiltshire Council and DC Leisure recognised the inconvenience the closure was having on the many frequent users of Lime Kiln and concerted efforts have been made to re-instate the key areas of the centre not directly damaged by the fire, (namely the RECEPTION, SPORTS HALL, KINETIKA GYM, SQUASH COURT, MOVEMENT STUDIO AND MEETING ROOM, AS WELL AS THE CREATION OF A SEPARATE CHANGING AREA FOR THE SCHOOLS) PENDING ANY UNFORSEEN PROBLEMS, WORK IS ON TARGET TO BE COMPLETED IN TIME TO OPEN THESE AREAS OF THE BUILDING ON 28 MARCH.
DC Leisure who manage the facility on behalf of Wiltshire Council will be
writing to all the regular users to inform them of this date and to confirm booking details. Invites will also be sent to representatives of the major clubs that use the facility to visit the centre prior to the opening to enable them to acquaint themselves with the facility. An opening weekend is also being planned and will be publicised shortly.
The re-instatement of the swimming pool and the associated facilities will be linked to wider discussions that will assess opportunities to create a campus in Wootton Bassett as the present situation allows scope to link any remedial works to both a long term vision for the town. Discussions regarding the campus should begin at the next meeting of the Wootton Bassett and Cricklade Area Board on March 23.
Jerry Kunkler, Portfolio Holder for Leisure, said: “I am very pleased the re-instatement works are on target for completion by March 28. I appreciate the impact the closure of Lime Kiln has had on the local community, and we have concentrated our efforts on getting the parts of the buildings least affected by the fire open at the earliest opportunity. I know local residents are very concerned the swimming pool is not opening at the same time. The damage in this area is extensive and we will be considering with the local community the best and most cost efficient way of integrating this work with the anticipated campus provision in the area."
Any members of the public who have any queries regarding memberships or activities should contact DC Leisure at the Olympiad on 01249 444144 or enquiries@limekilnlc.co.uk

Update as of Wednesday 16 February 2011
Although the fire in December was limited to certain parts of the building, there has been considerable damage to the heating and electrical systems which are essential to the overall operation of the centre, and this will take time to re-instate.
The first phase of refurbishment will concentrate on the clean-up of the key areas of the centre not directly damaged by the fire. These include the reception area, Sports Hall, Fitness Room, Squash Courts and meeting room, as well as the creation of a separate changing area for school pupils.
The first priority will be to repair the mechanical and electrical services, and pending any major interruptions, the areas listed above could be open by the end of March.
Both the council and DC Leisure very much regret the inconvenience the fire has caused to the many frequent users of Lime Kiln and both are committed to re-opening the centre as soon as possible.

Update as of Thursday 6 January 2011.
The fire damage is mainly centred on the health suite, male and female swimming changing rooms and main corridor.
In addition, there is structural ceiling/roof damage in those areas and the swimming pool plant room and heavy smoke pollution to the pool area.
A number of the services (water pipes, electricity cables etc) were located in the ceiling voids of the damaged areas and the full extent of this damage has yet to be established.
Insurance assessors have visited the site and are preparing their reports.
We are currently looking into the viability of opening the parts of the Centre not affected by the fire by re establishing the services to these areas in isolation.
These areas include the kinetika gym, sports hall, squash court, movement studio, two training rooms and the sports hall changing rooms & toilets.
Both Wiltshire Council and DC Leisure are committed to re open the Centre, in part or in full, as soon as is practicably possible.
We will advise as to potential re opening dates as soon as the information is available to us.
In terms of the different activities at Lime Kiln, please note the following information
Kinetika memberships are still active – due to the volume of transactions and the xmas and new year holiday period, the direct debits for January were processed prior to the fire damage. Future payment schedules will be adjusted to reflect the period of closure once the gym re opens. If this period extends beyond the end of January, a credit will be made to your account to cover the period of closure and the February debit will be suspended. For those members who have paid in advance for 12 months, we can extend your membership period to cover the period of closure or offer a partial refund once the period of closure is determined.
Please contact Sharon Chambers (sharonchambers@dcleisure.co.uk) or 01249 444144 ext 503 if you have a personal enquiry with your membership.
Swimming membership and swimming academy membership direct debits have not been processed for January. Partial refunds can be made to those who have paid in advance or a credit applied once the pool re opens. It is likely that the swimming pool will be out of action for several months, possibly even until Easter and we will continue to suspend direct debit payments until further notice.
For those for whom it is convenient, we may be able to accommodate some of the swimming academy in the lesson programmes on Malmesbury and Chippenham.
Please contact Maggie Mead or Karen Armstrong on 01249 444144 ext 549 (maggiemead@dcleisure.co.uk or karenarmstrong@dcleisure.co.uk ) for more information.
For trampoline and gymnastic courses, we may also be able to accommodate children at alternative sites. Please contact danspencer@dcleisure.co.uk for further details or 01249 444144 ext 552.

For club, school and group bookings – please contact Rachel Deegan (racheldeegan@dcleisure.co.uk ) or 01249 444144 ext 554.
